Magento, an open source platform is known for the inbuilt SEO that helps an Ecommerce store to drive more traffic and sales. You need to employ the most recent version of Magento for implementing SEO properly and for this you have to enable Server URL rewrites. This article is a guide that gives you tips to better optimize your Magento website.

CMS Pages

CMS is a unique and efficient management tool for an Ecommerce store and it allows site owners to make changes in the content. These are permanent pages including, Home page, About Us Page, Customer Service Page, etc. that give information about the store and are often managed by the backend panel. CMS pages are complete pages that can be accessed by their own URL address.

WWW vs. non-WWW version

WWW is the secure version while non-WWW is unsecure version. You need to choose from the two options and place the base URL as well as the preferred domain. When you choose among the versions, you will be allowed to locate the favored thing without changing the redirect from both the versions. Moreover, you can generate a 310 redirect through .htaccess with mode_rewrite. This way, Magento is checked for collecting the SID query to your URLs. Check and ensure that the base URL matches the redirect. Besides, when you edit the .htaccess file, place the index.php to the root.

Optimize Your Category

Magento lets you add the name of categories to access for product URLs. But, this function can produce duplicate content issues. Therefore, it is wise to disable this function and you can do it by, go to System ==> Configuration => Catalog => Search Engine Optimization and put ‘Use categories path for product URLs’ to ‘no’. Place the details for each product category by, Go to Catalog => Manage Categories.

Product optimization

Product page optimization is akin to category optimization. Place the Meta information for each ‘Default Values’ and ‘store view’. Remember, the Meta Title will overwrite the entire page title including categories and not just the product name. The pictures are used to be renamed to the Alt tags, product title and titles by default. Change the Alt tags and title for all product images. You can do this for all particular store views as well.

Headings

You are advised to avoid using header in the side columns. Make the text apposite to the store, that is, include keywords. Adding static and keyword-less titles has no logic with an h4. Change every h4 tags in div class=’head’ to strong tags. Consider this as the right time for content optimization and put the category name in an h1 and the product names in an h3 in the category pages and locate the product name in an h1 on the ‘On Product Pages’. H1 is the default logo and it should appear on the front page. The optimum goal is to get the title of the content in an h1 tag. Keep the category page with the category name and product page with product name. Clean up all excess headings.

Magento Template Optimization

When you use headings, the default Magento coats like ‘blue skin’, ‘modern theme’ and ‘default theme’ will not perform well. According to SEO there is a wide scope for development for Magento template. There are blank Magento SEO themes developed for store owner’s ease and it depends on the core Magento blank theme.

Clean the Codes

Generally, the JavaScript and CSS pages are not contributing anything good to Magento SEO. So, you need to shift these pages located in the template files towards the external JavaScript and CSS files. Hence, you can keep your templates cleaned and ensure that your clients are getting those files on the first load and help the search engines from downloading the same all time.

Meta description

Put an attractive description in the Meta tags as your clients will see the details in the result listings of the search engines.

URL Key

Get a keyword-rich URL and put it for all store views as well as for a Multilanguage store.  Avoid words like ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘for’, etc. and remember to keep the URL language independent.

Page Title

Keep the page title empty for employing the category name that also includes parents’ categories. When you customize it, the title will look as same as your input without the presence of the parent category. You are allowed to denote the name, description, page title and Meta Data for all store views. This is an advanced attribute for multi-language stores.
